This program provides a brief overview of the legacy toolmakers in New England and the mid-Atlantic from the pre-Revolution through 1880. That intro provides perspective and shows distribution of regions of activity. With Lancaster being the largest inland city of that time, some of the toolmakers were quite entrepreneurial and had local agents as well further west, east & south selling in their hardware stores. The Manheim Township Schauer family of wooden plane makers, as well as some of the other Lancaster county families of toolmakers will be discussed.
