Program Description

Event Details

Captain Henry Haines was born in Maytown, PA in 1835. He became a very prominent citizen of the community during his early years. When the outbreak of the Civil War occurred, he mustered in 1861 with the First Regiment. Haines did not sit by when he mustered out, instead, re-enlisting again in 1862. After his second enlistment, he chose to enlist for a third time. His third enlistment did not do him well as he became a Prisoner of War in early 1865. After Haines was released from prison and discharged, he moved back to Maytown and became a very prominent citizen not only of his community, but also of Lancaster County.

Bio for Glenn Bachert:
My name is Glenn D Bachert, I was born and raised in Columbia, and I am a graduate of Columbia High School, class of 1974.  Upon my graduation and after a few months I enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1975 and served until 1982. Having served throughout the U.S. and other military bases. In 1977, I married my high school sweetheart Carol. We been married for 49 years. We have 2 children and 2 grandchildren. I relocated back to Columbia in 2008 after living in Mount Joy for 30 years.

My love of history has always been a passion of mine especially with all members of my family having served in military service.  Traveling to many Civil War Battlefields I started to dive deep into the history when I received my Great-Great Grandfather's Sabre from the Civil War.  As other individuals knew about my passion I was asked to portray Captain Henry Haines during Maytown's Mayfest many years ago.  I have given lectures on his life and military service during his time of the Civil War.

Presented by Glenn Bachert with Cindy Beaston.
