STEMProgram Description
Event Details
Creature Feature helps children make connections between our native habitats in Pennsylvania and the adaptations of the animals that call them home. Acorn Acres will begin by introducing key vocabulary to the children through picture books, slide shows and live animal ambassadors to not only hook and engage them but also to develop their background knowledge.
Each group receives hands on materials to use in a Makerspace style learning environment. Participants will be charged with creating a newly discovered animal that is suited for life in one of Pennsylvania’s many habitats including wetlands, rivers and lakes, forests or grasslands.
Then participants are provided time to collaboratively plan their animal design-based on a set of criteria, build it in the Makerspace, evaluate their creation for possible redesign and finally share and defend their animal verbally. Participants will take their project home.
Ages 6-13, with a limit of 40 youth. Registration is required. Each youth must be registered individually.
This program will be held at Columbia Crossing River Trail Center (41 Walnut Street, Columbia).
