More about the project

Five hundred years ago, in an age marked by war, plague, inequality, and religious coercion, there were people across Europe who dared to imagine a society of community, peace, and freedom of conscience. These radicals were ready to die for their vision.

They were executed by the thousands – by water, by fire, and by sword – in both Catholic and Protestant states. Their stories come to life in ‘Heroes of the Radical Reformation’ – a new graphic novel trilogy by Plough Publishing that dramatically recreates a little-known chapter in the history of the Reformation.

The first book of the trilogy: By Water tells the story of Felix Manz, who along with his colleagues started the reform movement in Zurich on January 21, 1525. As part of a year-long international celebration of the quincentennial anniversary of the start of the Radical Reformation, Plough Publishing released By Fire, the second graphic novel, telling the life and legacy of Jakob Hutter, one of the Anabaptist movement’s most pivotal leaders. The third volume, By Sword is being illustrated and should be available soon.
