Reading Buddy - A Literacy Program
There are studies that show the beneficial aspects of children reading to dogs, including:
• Increased motivation to read independently
• Increased self-confidence and self-esteem
• Increased sense of support
• Reduction of stress/anxiety
The dogs that are part of our “Reading Buddy” program are certified therapy dogs with the KPETs and Red Cross organizations. These loving creatures help turn the reading environment into a non-threatening place where children can read just for the fun of it! There is no risk of embarrassment when words are mispronounced, when reading is accomplished at a slow speed or if he/she does not comprehend the exact meaning of sentences.
Kids are more excited about reading because reading to a dog is more fun! And in addition to increased reading fluency, kids may also show:
• Improved self-confidence and self-esteem
• A sense of pride in their accomplishments
• Involvement in other school activities
• A gentler, more respectful interaction with animals
• Confidence to read aloud in class
• A desire to check out books from the library
and ask the librarian about books
