Science Buddies Engineering Challenge!

We’re participating in the worldwide challenge!

What is this challenge? The annual Science Buddies Engineering Challenge is about getting kids to try engineering with a fun and accessible hands-on project. All qualified submissions will be entered in random drawings for a chance to win part of $10,000 (USD) in prizes for the library!

Who can participate?  Kids in grades K-12 (or homeschool equivalent). Individuals or teams of up to 4. Adults may watch but should not be involved in the problem solving.

How can I participate?  Please register so we know you are participating.  We will contact you with a time you will be given to demonstrate and score your device in front of our staff for your official entry.

You may either view the video for the rules, work on it at home until you’re satisfied, and bring it at your assigned time; or you can use our main library space (we’ll set up tables with the required materials). You can start as early as you like and rework it as many times as you wish! You will need to bring it to the library on February 28 and test it in front of our program staff at your assigned time, we will score your project and submit your results to Science Buddies. If you’d prefer to just come in and do the activity at the library, we’ll have the materials on hand from 4:30-6:00 so you can design and enter at the same time.

In case this date doesn’t suit you and your team, or if your trial doesn’t succeed, we may offer appointments for testing in March before the March 19 deadline. Contact us at sroche@quarryvillelibrary.org if you’d like to make an appointment to submit an entry!

What’s the prize? Our library gets a chance to win a cash prize out of a $10,000 prize bank. Every person or team that submits an entry gives us another chance to win – regardless of the success of the engineering design. But we think the real prize is the hands-on learning your child or teen will gain from this project! And your child gets bragging rights that he/she has competed in a worldwide venue sponsored by dozens of notable tech companies, major research universities, and private donors – all dedicated to sparking interest in engineering in young minds!
