In partnership with CWS Lancaster and in celebration of Immigrant Heritage Month/World Refugee Day, we are excited to welcome Alvaro Perez to Lancaster Public Library to lead a book discussion on a Spanish-language community read.
Mr. Perez is new to our community after working as a librarian in Venezuela. He'll be discussing It Will Be Night in Caracas by Karina Sainz Borgo. Please grab a copy and join us for the discussion!

Alvaro Perez-Suarez es un venezolano proveniente de una familia afortunada en estímulos morales, preocupada por la educación, con amor e instrucción por la artes la poesía la expresiones culturales, a la historia y su geografía diversa y al rico acervo cultural venezolano. Hizo estudios universitarios en Administración de Empresas igual que en Servicios Turísticos y Hoteleros obteniendo grado titulándose en ambas carreras. Laborando se desempeño como Bibliotecario en la Universiada Politécnica de Merida UPTM durante 24 anos especializándose en el Sistema Dewey recurso de catalogación que es usado por el Congreso de La Biblioteca del Congreso de los EEUU además ejecuto varios cursos de administración del sistema Alejandría que tiene como objetivo canalizar recursos para la dotación idónea de obras bibliográficas en torno a las ciencias, las humanidades y la tecnología. Durante su experiencia laboral perteneció al sindicato de trabajadores universitarios como presidente de reclamos, haciendo defensa de sus compañeros y de los contratos colectivos. Además hizo participación política en el partido político Voluntad Popular donde en su acerrimo actuar le ocasiono la persecución política del régimen Castro Chavista lo cual le ocasionaron su salida del país a el y a toda su familia. Se encuentra en el exilio desde el año 2017 desplazándose por Colombia, Ecuador, y Peru hasta ser reconocido por el USCIS y que le ha valio el Refugio en los EEUU donde actualmente vive tratando de reinventarse con mucho prestancia, voluntad, teson y mucho sacrificios, actualmente vive de manera sencilla y labora con mucho orgullo para una empresa privada de Lancaster PA. Se considera siempre un sonador por la libertad y un luchador por la democracia, un guerrero por las causas publicas y justas.
Alvaro Perez-Suarez is a Venezuelan from a family blessed with moral fortitude, concerned with education, with love for and instruction of the arts, poetry, cultural expressions, history and the diverse geography and rich cultural heritage of Venezuela. He completed his university studies in Business Administration and Tourism and Hotel Services, obtaining degrees in both majors. He worked as a librarian at the Merida Polytechnic University for 24 years, specializing in the Dewey Decimal System—applying the cataloging resource used by the Library of Congress. He also ran several courses in the Alexandria system, which has as its objective, channeling resources for the ideal sorting of works around science, the humanities and technology. During his tenure, he belonged to the University workers’ union as president of grievances, defending his colleagues and collective bargaining! He also participated in the Voluntad Popular (Popular Will) political party, where his staunch activism caused him to be persecuted by the regime, forcing he and his entire family to leave their homeland. He has been in exile since 2017, moving through Columbia, Ecuador and Peru until being recognized as an exile by the USCIS. This earned him Refugee status in the US, where he is currently lives and where he is trying to reinvent himself with a lot of diligence, will, tenacity and many sacrifices. He now works with great pride for a private company in Lancaster, PA. He considers himself always a dreamer for freedom, a fighter for democracy, and a warrior for just social causes.
