The term Founding Fathers is a twentieth century creation. The American Revolution was the catalyst that brought several different factions together to fight England, the common enemy. A diverse group of Colonial leaders determinately rallied the people from diverse regions to oppose what they saw as tyranny from across the ocean. These differences of opinion resulted in the creation of political parties, providing a mechanism and a forum for discussion and decision making rather than internal bloodshed. Multiple compromises resulted in the adoption of the United States Constitution in 1789. These lectures will focus on six men (John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe) who had significant impact upon the founding and sustaining of the nation.
